Rutherford Swim Association Recognized as a New Jersey Sustainable Business

Small businesses across New Jersey are starting to save money, share their successes, and inspire other businesses by implementing sustainable business best practices. Joining this list of small businesses, Rutherford Swim Association located in Rutherford, New Jersey, became one of the first businesses in the state to be recognized as a New Jersey Sustainable Business.

In August 2014, the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC) launched the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry. The registry is an Internet site where businesses implementing sustainable business practices can register their achievements and be recognized.

The Rutherford Swim Association achieved recognition for updating the existing light fixtures of the Rutherford Community Aquatic Center to LED Lighting. They also installed water bottle fillers, an Ultraviolet Light to sanitize the water which also helped reduce the use of chlorine, and a system known as Bio-OX which reduces and purifies chloramines. RSA’s upgrades to the Rutherford Community Aquatic Center resulted in a reduction of chemical use and waste, safer and cleaner air, and a $20,000 reduction in chemical and waste savings.

Since its inception in 2019, Rutherford Swim Association’s mission has been to educate young adults in citizenship, teamwork, and good sportsmanship through organized swimming activities. Additionally, the RSA teaches swimming skills to the public and creates an affinity for swimming as exercise and recreation. They have also modernized the existing swimming facilities, improved the air quality, and launched several successful aquatic programs including the Rutherford Swim Academy for Special and General Needs Students and adults. RSA also has the RebelAquatic Club, a highly competitive USA SWIMMING TEAM for ages 6-18, Rutherford Stingrays (Summer Swim Team), Rutherford Masters Swim Team for Adults, and much more.
