On Thursday, April 20th, the Shade Tree Commission planted a remembrance tree in recognition of Arbor Day. The tree was dedicated to Peter VanWinkle at VanWinkle Park, which is located on Riverside Ave across from the end of West Pierrepont Ave. Along with Steve Addeo, the Shade Tree Commission, and their liaison Councilman Matt Cokeley, the VanWinkle family and other members of the community gathered at the park for this special ceremony.

Peter VanWinkle passed away on December 12, 2021. He was a ninth generation Real Estate Broker of A.W. VanWinkle & Co., the oldest real estate firm in the country. Peter had served as a past Councilman, past President of the Chamber of Commerce, past President of Kiwanis Club, and past Elder and Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford. As a lifelong Rutherford resident, Peter was very involved in his community and made a lasting impact on those that he volunteered with, his clients, and his colleagues.

The tree and plaque beside the tree were sponsored by the Shade Tree Commission and Calhoun-Mania Funeral home. Angelo Mania, business owner of Calhoun-Mania, also attended the tree dedication.
