The Army-Navy football game has been a part of American culture since it began in 1890, with few interruptions and an annual game since 1930. The academies even played during World War II. Among the great aspects of the rivalry are tradition, camaraderie, and patriotism. Many who watch it cheer for a team because a family member served or because the players' genuine sincerity sparks unique emotions often withheld from other athletic events. Moreover, the Army-Navy football game offers Americans a time to feel proud and to table political differences as they watch men compete in a game while the dangers of defending our country sit in the distance, waiting to present unthinkable tests and challenges.
A few weeks ago, on December 14, 2024, Rutherford’s Murray-Hodge American Legion Post 453 hosted a party at its historic post to watch the Army-Navy football game. More than sixty people attended. The party began with the post’s leader, Commander Charles Gunn, welcoming everyone and blessing the food, and the day continued until the traditional post-game rituals were completed. Some who attended wore an Army shirt or hat, while others were dressed in Navy merchandise. The afternoon was filled with lively conversations and good times for all. While the event helped raise money that Murray-Hodge American Legion Post 453 plans to use to support some great causes and to help others, the goal was to bring people together to enjoy a special American event.
Murray-Hodge American Legion Post 453 is grateful to all who attended. The post wants to thank Mason’s Cellar of Rutherford, Jim Dandy’s of Rutherford, Michael’s Salumeria of Lyndhurst, Anthony and Sons Bakery of Denville, and all of the people who made generous donations that helped make it such an enjoyable day.
Murray-Hodge American Legion Post 453 plans to make this an annual event that is open to all. The post also hopes the Rutherford community will consider hosting more events at the historic site.
